Marlin del Rey was born from a family connection, a surprise phone call, and a custom-built catamaran. When Greg, a serial opportunist, bought a 66-foot catamaran, he immediately called his nephew, Jeff, a lawyer who had traded his career for a life of running a hotel in the surf town of Tamarindo. A last-minute decision was made to reroute clients from a competitor’s tour, and Marlin del Rey officially launched that day, even though it lacked permits, staff members, and promotional brochures.
The company’s early days were a chaotic mix of grit and improvisation. Meals were cooked in Jeff’s home kitchen, fuel runs took entire days, and Jeff juggled tour logistics with his many other responsibilities. Greg handled the big picture from afar while continuing to come up with brilliant (and, yes, somewhat outlandish) ideas. Marlin del Rey’s first boat was pushed to its absolute limits, a fact that wasn’t helped by Jeff and Greg serving as an ad hoc maintenance crew to save on expenses.
Despite the U.S. real estate market collapsing, the company expanded, hired employees, and purchased more boats. The reckless initial decision to jump in the deep end of Costa Rica tourism paid off, and Marlin del Rey grew from two boats to a successful fleet of four. Today, what began as a high-stakes personal gamble has transformed into a well-oiled, highly efficient operation. From our booking team to our maintenance staff, every person plays a part in delivering what we’ve always aimed for: a seamless, laid-back, and unforgettable day on the water—the kind guests remember long after the salt’s salt has been rinsed off.
